MERCER ISLAND Mercer Island's first inhabitants were not until 1885, long known as the Vacation Landing beyond Seattle and was accessed only by boat or ferry for those trying to escape the City hustle. Still today, it is reverent in its beauty, calm and peacefulness. Working in the City while living in the most beautiful place just minutes away. Mercer Island is it's own City, with it's own Schools, City Planning and Government. Your voice will be heard on Mercer Island as there are rarely more than 20,000 in population at any given time. Approximately 10,000 households inhabit the island and it supports them all very well. Once you have crossed the bridge, you need go no further. There are only a handful of traffic lights in the northern City area with restaurants, grocers, and all that you might need. There is an additional shopping area at the south end. With approx. 475 acres of Parkland, with every kind of park you can imagine, plus you are never too far from a waterfront park to relax, and enjoy the beautiful views of Lake Washington, Mt. Rainier, the Cascade Mtn Ranges, Mt. Baker, the Olympic Mtn Ranges and all the cities; Seattle, Bellevue, Medina, and Renton. Even Interstate 90 passes through the island, hidden below parks, ball fields, tennis courts and places for picnics. The Schools here are highly respected, and are another reason why people are drawn to Mercer Island. Mercer Island students consistently rank highly among schools in the state for students attending post-secondary schooling--approximately 90% of graduating Mercer Island high school seniors continue on for further education. |
